Chapter Six

LEARN TO ASK QUESTIONS

I Samuel 17: 25-31

One evening in the mid-eighties, I went into a boutique to buy a shirt. The interior of the boutique was dimly lit with what we used to call Mercury light in those days. The effect of the light was great on the fabrics and the various wares on display in the shop. I spotted a beautiful flower-patterned shirt. I negotiated with the shop owner who promised me that I was buying a very good shirt and we struck a deal. He assured me of the premium quality of the shirt and I went home feeling good that I had gotten good value for my money.

The following day, I decided to wash the shirt before using it and got a great shock. Upon contact with water, the color of the shirt ran. The water took on the color of deep blue ink. The flower patterns became messy and what was so attractive a few hours earlier was a piece of annoyance. I had been fooled by the ambience of the shop and the impact of the lighting inside the shop. I lost money in the process. I should have gone during the day when I would have been able to see through the deception, but it was too late. Life is a night market where counterfeits get sold for the price of the original. Many people have been defrauded and several more are still being defrauded. Quite a few more will yet be.

The whole world would have remained where it was one hundred years ago, but for one singular action by man, which is the act of asking questions. The Wright brothers asked the ‘why and how’ heavy objects can fly, the result was the Airplanes. Questions of how dead weight would float on water triggered the invention of ships. Elevators came from a question on how man can climb long flights of stairs with less effort and in the shortest time possible. Stealth bombers were the result of questions on how to fly over enemy territories to bomb specific locations without being spotted.

A winning mentality is a mentality that challenges the status quo, queries things and asks questions. If you are complacent with your present, you will be a stranger to your future.

In I Samuel 17:25-31, David came unto the battle field and saw the shame of Israel. Each time Goliath came out to challenge them, the men fled from him in fear and discussed

amongst one another on what would be done to the man who kills Goliath. David heard and wanted to be sure of the deal, so he asked questions that elicited exactly the same statement the men had earlier made in Verse Twenty Six. Eliab, his brother heard what he said and was angry with him.

Verse 28:

‘And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? And with whom hast thou left those
